When I tell people about my fears of aging, they usually respond with "Oh, you have nothing to worry about, you are Asian and you will still look young when you get old." Flattering, Somewhat. But let's not just sit back and rely on my Asian genes.
GET ENOUGH SLEEP
This sounds insane to most people but I aim to be in bed by 10:30pm every night. On the weekends, maybe 11:00pm but I start to get a little antsy about still being up. Getting enough sleep really helps with aging and with your skin. Your skin regenerates itself when you are sleeping, so why wouldn't you want to give it as much time as possible? When I don't get enough sleep, I feel like my skin is dry and dull looking and everyone notices. Or maybe it is just the dark circles under my eyes.
DRINK LOTS OF WATER
I drink 1.5-2 litres a water a day and usually I would have drank all of that before 4pm. The benefits of drinking water doesn't need to be hashed out here. You should all know by now how important drinking water is for your health and skin. I stop drinking water usually around 8pm because I don't want to retain too much water when I go to bed and to prevent waking up with a puffy face.
CUT THE CRAP FOOD
I am the first person to admit that I have eaten chips for breakfast, poutine for lunch, and chips and salsa for dinner all in one day. This gal loves her junk food. That said, I don't do this all the time. This crap food binge might happen once a year now. For two reasons, I am trying to be a good role model to my daughter who is always staring at what I eat; and I feel and look like crap after I eat like this. You are what you eat. Eat crap, look like crap.
TREAT BEFORE YOU AGE
The time to start using anti-aging products is not after you see signs of aging. It is WAY before. You want to help your skin by preparing it and preventing it from the unenviable. For me, I always:
Make sure my face is clean so whatever products I use afterwards can really soak into my skin;
Use eye cream because it is really the first sign of aging;
Extend my face cream to my neck because it is the second sign of aging;
Have creams for different purposes. Yes, you really need a day and night cream;
Use enough cream on your face. What is the point of using a cream, if you cheap out and not use enough?
ALWAYS BE ON TOP OF THINGS
There is always new products, procedures, or things you can do to help your skin. Just pay attention to your skin and be aware of new advancements. You don't have to try everything but being in the know will definitely help when you need it!
BE A HAPPY PERSON
Sure they say if you smile too much you will have lines on your forehead and around your mouth, but the alternative is worse - not smiling and not being happy. What is the point of living if you are not happy?! I find when I am happy, I will have a natural radiance in my skin and I feel great. (As indicated in the picture above.) Being a happy person is probably the best way to age gracefully.
