I don't mind being a working mom because I really do enjoy my job and the people I work with. The biggest downfall is being away from my daughter. The second biggest downfall is the lack of time to do everything that needs to be done. I struggled with the latter until I realized if I use my time effectively, I can actually squeeze in errands before and during my lunch hour. (It sounds a little crazy at first but trust me, you will be surprised by how much you can accomplish!

Generally speaking your work hours are set and there isn't a lot of flexibility with that. (Got to put in your hours somehow if you want to stay employed!) My work hours are from 7:45am-12:00pm and 1:00pm-4:00pm. In the morning, I can do a task or errand if it takes around 10 minutes, if I am able to leave the house on time and if there is no traffic on the way to work. During my lunch hour, I can do an hour long task but I rarely take up the entire hour because I have to take into account travel time and have time to eat. Here are some tasks/errands I sneak in during my work day:

  • Buy groceries (Perfect when you are missing a couple of ingredients for dinner.)

  • Get car washed (If I don't do this regularly, my car is not white but grey 100% of the time.)

  • Drop off library books

  • Get gas

  • Go to the post office

  • Any banking tasks that require you to be at the branch office

  • Buy gifts and cards (When you forgot there is another kid's birthday on the weekend.)

  • Buy groceries (When you need to buy enough for the week.)

  • Meet up with friends

  • Have networking lunches

  • Pay bills

  • Research vacation/staycation ideas

  • Shop for yourself (clothes, shoes, toiletries)

  • Get an oil change

  • Get eyebrows threaded

  • Get manicure or pedicure

  • Make emergency phone calls for your kid

  • Make calls that require you to be put on hold (If you have a headset, you won't mind being on hold for 37 minutes.)

Do you have any tips on maximizing your work day? I would love to hear them!
