Hello! I’m Sherry. I’m married to my husband Ben, and we have two children, Colton - 6 and Ellisyn (aka - Ellie) - 4. My husband and I have been together for 16 years! My kids are a big ball of energy. When I had my daughter, I thought I had hit the jackpot because my son was bouncing off the walls. That quickly changed when she hit 18 months. She not only is as crazy as my son, you add some drama on top, she’s just at the next level.
If you ask my friends and family, I’m sure they will tell you that Sherry likes to ‘share’. I’m so very passionate about sharing knowledge about almost anything! Could be professionally or about everyday life!
WHAT IS YOUR BUSINESS AND WHAT LEAD YOU TO START IT?
My full time life is a CPA (“Certified Professional Accountant”) and I still work at the accounting firm that I articled with right out of University.
My business life is Mod.Totxx, which is an online children’s boutique that specializes in curating outfits for kids ages 2-5 from Korean designer and local brands. I’ve been working at my full-time career for 11 years and I wanted to start this business as an outlet for me to challenge myself, express myself and something that I can call my own.
WHO INSPIRES YOU?
Hands down, my parents, no question about that. My parents were refugees who fled Vietnam after the end of the Vietnam war, some may be familiar with the term “Vietnamese boat people”. My parents were among those who had fled Vietnam by boat, survived the passage on overcrowded boats, storms and dangers from pirates, ended up in a refugee camp in Macau for two years before being sponsored to come to Canada.
They came to Canada with nothing, but worked extremely hard, owned their own restaurant business before retiring. They are now caregivers to my two children and my niece. They have worked tirelessly to make sure their kids had every opportunity available to them, and now unselfishly dedicate their retirement to help me raise mine.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR TIPS TO MAINTAIN A WORK-LIFE BALANCE?
This is a tough one! I am fortunate enough to have lots of flexibility at work and have recently reduced my hours down to 4 days a week. This has given me more time to spend with the kids, give my parents a bit of a break, and I am able to run errands or catch up on some housework with this extra time.
Truthfully though, my kids are still young, so they still take a lot out of me. More often than not, I do have to open up my computer at night to catch up on work that I couldn’t get done throughout the day.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER MOMS WANTING TO START A BUSINESS?
Just got for it! You are your biggest obstacle. Do not let failure hold you back. Take every success and even failure as a learning experience. You will never know unless you try and who said success comes easily?
IF YOU HAD AN EXTRA HOUR TODAY, WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH IT?
Sit down and watch an episode of Suits.
