SETTING GOALS FOR 2019

Recently, I heard a saying that really stuck with me: Don’t live the same year as the last. This really got me thinking about how I can have a better year than the last, do greater things, and achieve more. The only answer I came up with is to plan ahead and set goals.

As most of you know, I have a full time job and sometimes I bring strategies from work and apply them to my personal life. It might sound weird to be thinking strategic planning (for the next year, three years, or five years) in your personal life when you don’t have to produce an annual report or answer to someone but it makes sense because it helps me plan ahead for success and holds myself accountable.

Because I am not an “organization,” there is no need to be as rigid when setting my personal goals for 2019. I am also a huge believer in dreaming big. If you want to do big things, the first step is to think big. How do you know when you are dreaming big enough? When you are slightly embarrassed to tell other people because of what they might think of you or worse, laugh at you for even dreaming in the first place.

Once you have your “big dream,” start calling it your big goal. and take the following steps:

  1. Goals are achieved through taking steps towards it. The next step is to go backwards and think about the steps you need to achieve this goal.

  2. Once you have broken up your goal into achievable chunks, you need to set some SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timebound.) This won’t be easy if you haven’t done them before. However, having a one sentence goal will make it easier for you to remember and focus on them. These goals are for yourself so don’t worry about making them perfect.

  3. Plan out the year and determine what goals, or stages of your goal, you will be working on monthly or quarterly.

Another thing that I have learned to do for my personal life and not my professional life is envisioning all of my goals being accomplished and how I feel after they have been accomplished. You might think this sounds a little wonky but it is amazing what transpires when you do. If you believe your goals will be accomplished, you are that much closer to it happening. Good luck!!
