For the past couple of months, I bypassed two (potentially three) major shopping events - Black Friday, Christmas, and Boxing Day. Years ago, I would flock to the mall on one or all of these days and buy close to an entire new wardrobe for the rest of the year. I was taught as a child to buy things on sale to stretch my dollar further. Obviously, it makes sense to buy my clothes on these days when the sales are the best.Read More
I think the most common misconception of anti-aging products is when to start using them. Often I hear people say they don’t need anti-aging products because they don’t have wrinkles yet. I try to explain to them the best time to start using these products is before there are any signs of aging.Read More
I am a newbie at self-care. I was never good at taking care of myself because my inner voice always told me that doing things for myself is vain, frivolous, and a waste of money. I should be doing something productive, better yet, something that yields a financial gain.Read More
We never stop. As women we are always on the go, cooking, cleaning, working, doing. We forget that taking care of others includes taking care of ourselves. Our own guilt plays a role in how much we do and how little we stop to think about us. We feel guilty about relaxing, letting others down and having to tell others no. Guilt prevents us from realizing that self-care is not selfish, self-care is self-love.Read More
I was never ever a fashionista. Not when I was younger, definitely not now that I am older.
When I was younger, I followed trends or what my friends were wearing. When I started my career, I followed what everyone else was wearing in the office or other professionals working downtown. Now that I am older, has worked professionally for a long time, and become a mom, I think I finally figured out what works for me.
Having a streamlined wardrobe allows me to always have something to wear that looks good, that I feel good in, and can get dressed quickly (because my kid makes me late all the time.)Read More
I learned of this term for the first time almost two years ago. It was introduced to me by Kiki of Pursing Pretty. I followed her on Instagram and was inspired how she always looked good on a budget as a mom. We met up for coffee and my biggest take away was "to never be in a mom rut." I learned to put some effort into how I look and feel (without going to the salon every month, having facials daily, and mani/pedis constantly.)Read More
As much as I would love to have a capsule wardrobe, I can't for two main reasons:
1) I live in Calgary, Alberta. One day it is 23 degrees, the next day it is 6 degrees and snowing. My wardrobe literally has to have everything from sleeveless shirts to sweaters.
2) I have a professional full time job that requires business wear and I like to be active with my toddler. There is no way that I can go from work to the playground.Read More
Every mom with more experience than you will tell you "me time" is absolutely necessary.
I never really had "me time" before Grace was born because I was never really one to pamper myself. I always had a job and a side business so that didn't leave a lot of time for anything else. At the most, I would get a hair cut at the beginning of wedding season and a pedicure if I had planned in advance to wear sandals when working a wedding. (Rarely the case.)Read More
If you live in Calgary, Alberta like me, you might have been feeling a little wee bit cold. I honestly don't remember it ever being -42 degrees celsius in Calgary and I have lived here all my life. While I generally bundle up very well already, I have found a need to change up my skin care slightly.Read More
Last year, I was asked what I want for Christmas and this was my Christmas wish list:
1) Sleep in on the weekends.
2) Not have to fold laundry for a year, month, or even a week.
3) To go to the bathroom without an audience.
Obviously, this is more of dream list than a Christmas list.Read More
I know, it is so hard to stay in shape as a mom. (Almost) even harder doing it while on budget. You might not be able to tell from my "round" shape, but I have never bought a gym membership or hired a personal trainer before. If you are wanting to get into shape or stay in shape, these are two very logical solutions people steer towards. Not me.Read More
Growing up, I was told to be gentle with my skin because if I rub it or do too much with it, I will have more wrinkles when I grow up. I adhered to this somewhat growing up. As I got older and my skincare routine included more steps, I started to grow weary of this “tip.” I asked myself, how is it that I’m doing more with my skin and yet I look better?!Read More
I am a reformed beauty product junkie.
Don't get me wrong, I still LOVE trying new products but I am being smarter with my choices and money now. Gone are the days where I buy things on a whim, because it is endorsed by a celebrity, or because it has cool packaging (lame I know.) The whole trial and error thing is a huge waste of money, not to mention super disappointing when you try something for the first time and it doesn't work for you. Here are some ways to make smarter beauty products purchases:Read More
My focus has always been on skincare, not makeup. I always used some makeup but didn't really know how to apply it until I was on maternity leave and spent a lot of time on youtube while breastfeeding or pumping in the middle of the night. Two of my favorite youtube stars are (of course) Michelle Phan and Lindy of Bubzbeauty.Read More
You all heard the term before "beauty sleep" but how many of you actually embrace it? I honestly would love to sleep the hours a baby or toddler does. I love sleeping and it has been one of my most guarded things that I do. I can give up on chips and bacon, internet, and even Netflix for some solid hours of sleep.Read More
I have always been a multi-tasker but after I became a mom, I really had to kick this multi-tasking thing in high gear! I realized I now have less time in general and most of it was used on someone that needs a lot of attention and assistance with every aspect of her life. A couple of times, I ran out to run errands with Grace and she got a lot of complements on how cute she looked in her outfit. I didn’t get any because I looked like crap. I had 25 minutes to get out the door and 20 of it was used on her.Read More
AHHH...January. The time when we try to start fresh, change old habits, and adopt good new ones. This is also the time when most of us decide THIS is the time to finally lose some weight and get back in the gym. If you are one of these people, good for you!
Because this blog post is about skincare and not about exercise (I know nothing about the latter other than doing some is better than none), here are some skincare habits you should adopt along with your new exercise routine:Read More
With the holidays upon us, going to a couple of parties is inevitable. Regardless of the party you throw or attend, there are some similar things that will happen to all of us:
We will get less sleep (unless you can make it up the next day);
We will look a little haggard; and
We will be too tired to follow our usual skincare routine.
When I tell people about my fears of aging, they usually respond with "Oh, you have nothing to worry about, you are Asian and you will still look young when you get old." Flattering, Somewhat. But let's not just sit back and rely on my Asian genes.Read More
So, this is something else I do that when I tell people, they look at me like I have five heads. (People usually look at me like I have three heads already,) One friend even said to me: I know Kate Moss swears by this for an instant face lift but I didn't think real people do it. Her comment made me question my "realness."Read More
